News just in — a writer takes advantage of the financial crisis to further his career. Sebastian Faulks told Pandora for her column at The Independent that he will be the first to write The Bonfire of the Vanities for the noughties. Of course he didn’t put it that way — what happened was, he was working on something before doom struck and just had a feeling. His next novel is about a week in the life of a hedge fund manager. Perhaps sensibly, he’s chosen to avoid the maelstrom of today in favour of the relative calm of December 2007, when UK mortgage giant Northern Rock collapsed and the chill wind started blowing….
