Anti-terrorist tactics kill children’s book
According to a report in the Toronto Star, renowned Canadian children’s book author Robert Munsch’s latest book has fallen victim to heightened airport security. The book, about a little girl who smuggles dolls onto a plane, has been put on hold by Scholastic. Surprise!
Given the heightened security measures at Canadian airport since the attempted Christmas bombing of a US plane, editors thought better of Munsch’s storyline.
Munsch tells the Star, “Scholastic calls me up in a panic saying, ‘Hold everything, that kid couldn’t smuggle anything onto the plane, she’s lucky to get onto the plane herself.’ ”
According to Diane Kerner, director of publishing for Scholastic Canada, the book wasn’t slated to be published until next year, so postponing it isn’t too big a hardship for the company. And they are already in discussion with Munsch about other projects.
Kerner tells the Star,”"Always when you are doing books for kids, you have to be sensitive to what their real world is. Especially because with Robert Munsch’s books, what he’s doing is taking real situations and making them ridiculous.”
And we thought this real-world situation was ridiculous enough on its own.
