Cracked Like Teeth
No, I didn’t get into a fight last night—that’s the #1 bestseller on the New York Times Nonfiction List! Empanadas in Worcester follows, at a close second. And how about Jockstraps Ain’t For Eating, coming in at #5 this week?
That is, according to debut author Steve Healy, author of the new novel How I Became A Famous Novelist, just out from indie press Grove/Atlantic’s Black Cat imprint. Hely opens his satire (which, in short, revolves around a plan to show up his ex-girlfriend at her own wedding by showing up a famous novelist and running off with her hottest bridesmaid) with a knockoff (and very accurate) image of the NYT bestseller list. Papercuts ran the image a month ago, but now that the book is in stores, the mimicry of the list has taken over the internet: of course, through facebook and twitter (with the help of Ryan, “Steve’s underpaid assistant”).
The twitter hashtag is #hely, in honor of the author, and people have been tweeting fake titles to add to the mock list all day. My personal favorites so far? @BySeanFerrell’s Sisyphus Was Right: Why Trying Doesn’t Get Us Anywhere, and How to Get Around Trying and @ChapmanChapman’s Nite: A WWII Memoir by James Frey. What titles would you add to the list?
