King of the Internet meets, well, King of Kings
Now Tao Lin can add rockstar to his list, with the release of his first single as part of Jesus Christ (the Indie Band), which is actually a “sound project,” and which you can hear here. Lin has teamed up with the infamous (and mysterious) Carles of Hipster Runoff … which is actually leading to more rumors that they are one and the same person. But regardless, their first song, (his first song?), “Is This Really What You Want?” has been released into the world (wide web) and is gathering some pretty decent attention.
Prefix Mag judges them, “Maybe not as good as the first Jesus Christ, but good” (although they can’t figure out whether it’s sincere or satire) and Pretty Much Amazing compares the song to a Hipster Runoff post put to music (actually, fairly accurate) and then dubs them “not that bad.”
I can’t disagree. That said, let’s get it on the record that I am not a music critic. The song was addictive, although not in the I-instantly-need-to-hear-that-again kind of way. Lin never takes his words lightly (no matter how big the joke) and the song pulls you through (ignore some of the more over-earnest clips) just like one of his poems might. If the poems were set to a pulsating beat and some sort of mystic electronica background.
