Two, count ‘em, two books about the Bernard Madoff scandal were announced by two different New York conglomerates yesterday. According to a very brief report on the AP wires, HarperCollins and Random House each announced deals yesterday, with press releases that suggested an urgency that made it seem they were putting out the books soon, and an out-to-lunch quality that suggested they were in no hurry. The HarperCollins book was announced for 2010, and will be written by reporter Andrew Kirtzman, a local TV journalist. The Random House version had no announced date, and will be written by Richard Behar, a magazine journalist who has written for Time, Fortune, and the like.
Dennis Johnson is the founder of MobyLives, and the co-founder and co-publisher of Melville House.
