Yoani Sánchez speaks to The World

by

Yoani Sánchez

Yesterday, Yoani Sánchez, author of Havana Real: One Woman Fights to Tell the Truth About Cuba Today, spoke to Carol Hills of PRI/BBC’s The World for this interview.

In the interview, Yoani explains how blogging became a form of release for her, that her intention was not to be a rebel, and that “the main idea is for my blog to be a chronicle of daily life and reality.”

She explains to Hills why, in 2002, she felt compelled to leave Cuba and move to Switzerland after Fidel Castro’s birthday. But then she also explains why, 2 years later, she decided to move back to Cuba. “I wanted to come back, not to the same conditions of silence and of wearing a mask; I wanted to come back to speak out. And that is what I am doing.”

she found out how much she had to work in switzerland, and she said to her self, forget it, i will make my own living talking bad about castro in cuba. she can fool you, but she does not fool me, i grew up in cuba honestly when we talk about freedom i don’t know the differences between usa and cuba, the main thing that castro has been doing all his life is to make sure that poor people eat and they have a home. call me communist if you want to. or tell me to go back home, i have my own reason why i’m here in this country.
